It’s the most wonderful time of the year and it is so because it is Christmas. Hello everyone, this is Ramon and I wish you all a merry Christmas and my apologies as I was not able to post this article on Christmas day as I was busy enjoying this beautiful day that falls on December 25th every year. I hope everyone had a beautiful Christmas with your family and loved ones and in this post, I would like to share my knowledge with you on why Christmas is celebrated on 25th of December every year and the story behind it.
Christmas is an annual commemoration as a birth of Jesus Christ and it’s recorded in Matthew and Luke gospel accounts and the first recorded Christmas celebration was in Rome on December 25th, 336 AD. Christmas starts on 25th and run for 12days, ending with the feast of the epiphany on January 6th and hence we celebrate the 12 days of Christmas. A lot of us including myself have asked this question, “was Jesus really born on 25th of December”? The answer to this question is not in the Bible and Christian calendar set aside different dates to celebrate various Christian saints and doctrines, but there are various factors that contributed to the selection of December 25th as a date of celebration. One of the reasons is the date was near to the date of winter solstice on the Roman Calendar. On December 25th, the sun reverses the direction of declining path and effectively begin to ascend, creating days that are bright and warmer, thus bringing the promises of light and replenishment. And the same light and replenishment bringing happiness in people life was the reason to believe a savior was born on that day.
The second reason why Christians believe Jejus was born on 25th December and perhaps the most popular reason is because of the annunciation of virgin Mary that took place on 25th March. The annunciation celebrates when the angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would conceive and give birth to Christ and a count to 9 months from March 25th falls on December 25th making it a feast day and a holy day for the Christians all around the world representing the birth of God.
