Recently I watched the Lion King, The 2019 movie and yes I watched it 3 years later. I don’t really know what took me so long and why I was so late or may be I do and actually it has to do with my personality type, you know the one who are quite skeptical about trying new things and when they do try it, it either goes in one of the two ways, it’s either wow! it’s so amazing or just nah! No-No-No. Wait, let me not divert from the subject since its not about the Lion king or my review on it. But this post is about the actual lion from the Panthera family and I will be getting all nosey and share the interesting facts that I learned about lions with you guys.
Ever since I was a kid, I would always watch national geography and see lioness hunt their prey. I would feel both excited and nervous. It was really adventurous and I was fascinated to see how the nature works and understanding the wild animals. I’ve also met many people who love big cats such as lion and are interested in learning about them. So this post is for everyone that like big cats and I hope you are excited to find some interesting facts about them.
- The large cats also known as “big cats” is used to refer the five big cats known as the tiger, lion, jaguar, leopard and cheetah. The tigers are the biggest in size and the cheetahs are the smallest and fastest in the animal kingdom. While lions prefer to live in groups also known as Pride. The male lion are the second largest in Cat species and they have the magnificent mane around their neck. However, in some places the male lack the manes.
- The lions live in African Grassland also known as Savanna. The lions are the top predator in Savanna and not the only carnivore. Since there is a huge herd of plant eating mammals that live on the vast expanses of savanna, it supports a diverse array of predators like Cheetahs, wild dogs and hyena.
- Lions are known to hunt in groups, but they also hunt on their own when they generally restrict their attention to small prey. In general the female lion does the hunting.
- Lions are known to hunt down a large prey weighing between 100lb and 650lb like large Zebra and Wildebeest, which however is not accurate all the time. In case of harsh condition, causing a shortage of prey or in some cases when a lion gets sick or disabled they are known to hunt smaller prey such as rats, small lizards or even the fish.
- Male lions are not known to be the hunters. They usually take care of the territory. But in some cases male lions, with their greater size and strength, are more likely than female lions to tackle a huge prey. Such large kills will keep the lions sated with food for long period.
- There are documented cases of males killing cubs that aren’t their own and eating the bodies afterward. Then there are other documented cases of male killing cubs that aren’t their own and abandoning carcass afterward.
- Mature male lions will fatally wound each other during combat but usually let the loser escape or kill the injured one on the battle. Most of the time lions do not engage in cannibalistic behaviors.
So these are some of the facts I know about the royal family of the Animal Kingdom. I was elated to share that with you guys and now when you go to Zoo or if you ever go on a safari and spot this majestic being, make sure to stop by and let them know that you know about them. I’m just kidding, don’t do it, they are natural born killers and might mistake you for their food. Remember nature is beautiful and respect is the key component. Thankyou for reading and don’t forget to share your knowledge or any other interesting facts you know about these big cats.
