The most alarming topic in the world right now is the climate change and with the change in climate comes the negative effect that affects us in many ways. Today we shall be talking about that.
The earth’s average temperature has risen over 1.2 degree Celsius since the nineteenth century and the year 2020 was the hottest year on record and its impact was not good at all. Greenland lost 152 gigaton of ice between September 2019 and august 2020 and now that I am diving into numbers, let me also give you an interesting fact. 1 gigaton of water can fill 400000 Olympic size swimming pool and water 152 times that amount has been added to our ocean and when the ocean surface rose, so did its temperature. In 2020 80% of ocean area experienced one marine heat wave.
The change in climate and its effect can be seen globally. Asia and Africa witnessed heavy rainfall and flooding, while there was case of snowfall in Madrid, Spain in 2020 which is concerning as it is not supposed to snow in Madrid. When our Earth heats up, droughts are prolonged, ice melts more rapidly, more water are evaporated into atmosphere causing Earth to receive more rainfall that causes flood and extreme weather condition.
Most of us think that the effect of climate change is limited to those living near the ocean or the polar bears in the arctic. But one need to realize that it affects all of us. It makes us late for work, it affects the food we eat and our healthcare. Now let’s talk about how it affects our food. Around 3.2 billion people in the world consume fish and it’s known to be a major source of protein. Fish provides 17% of world’s animal protein and now a report shows that climate change is putting pacific salmon at risk. The young salmon die when the water warms up above a certain threshold. Floods have been flushing salmon eggs and destroying their nest. In 2019, 8 million farm salmon were killed which is estimated to be around 82 million dollars. The rising temperature is causing fishes to disappear resulting the increase in price for the meal that we like to consume.
Climate Change not only affect our food but also our health. The rise in temperature results in dehydration, hyperthermia, heatstroke and its also the reason for all the wildfires. The flame from wildfire kills people and it causes air pollution resulting in health problem like asthma and bronchitis which increases the cost of medicine and hinders our life in a negative way.
I can keep on going for a long about the other several harmful effect of climate change and how its affecting us and I might extend this topic in near future and talk about it in more detail, but for now I think I made my case and I hope that you will take the climate change more seriously.
