Carbohydrate is one of the nutrients in our diet and its widely misunderstood. So today I would like to talk about carbohydrates. What exactly is carbohydrates? and why is it the reason for weight gain? As we all know most of the food that we eat contains carbohydrates. It includes sugar and starches, which provide our body with energy, and fiber which is important for a healthy digestive system.
There are two types of carbohydrate: complex carbohydrates and simple carbohydrates. In simple words the complex carbohydrates are the good carbs while simple carbohydrates are the bad carbs. Complex high fiber carbohydrates are a key part of a healthy diet. The complex carbohydrates contain fiber, vitamins, and minerals and thus these are the carbs that we need to consume. Also known as healthy carbohydrates, these carbs are rich in nutrients and fiber and are digested slowly. Some examples of good carbohydrates include low starch leafy veggies, Swiss chard, cabbage, kale etc.

So now we know about the good carbs, the complex carbohydrates, and its part in our healthy diet. But the other question that comes with carbohydrates is why does it makes us fat? The answer is obvious, eating too much of carbohydrates can cause you to gain weight. And if the carbohydrates are not the complex one but the simple one then it does a lot of damage to our body including weight gain. Let me explain to you in detail and how it works; so, our digestive tracts break down the carbohydrates into sugar, which are absorbed into the blood and those glucose molecule travels in the body. The glucose is the most essential fuel for the body providing us with the energy. And if we eat too many carbohydrates then we need then the liver will store the excess as glycogen and once the liver glycogen stores are full, excess glucose is converted into fat and then stored around the body causing our body to gain weight.
